5 Ways of Business Transformation using Cloud

13 AUG 2021

According to the ABS Characteristics of Australian Businesses survey, 55% of businesses used cloud computing in 2019-20, compared to 42% in 2017-18 which is an increase of over 30%.

The survey states Cloud technology (57%) is the second most common ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) used by businesses in Australia.

“Cloud is the second most implemented technology solution for businesses.” – ABS

What is Cloud?

A simple Oxford definition states that Cloud is “the practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer.”

5 Ways in which Cloud Computing benefits Business performance

1) Business Applications (SaaS)

Traditionally, business software was available packaged as setup files. Today, the emphasis is on applications that run on the cloud and provide the same level of functionality, if not better.

The flood of cloud-based software or SAAS (software as a service) vendors shows no sign of slowing down. Cloud-based software utilises built-in advantages of Cloud technology as well as take installing and updating software applications out of the equation and provide better protection against software piracy and theft.

Up to date, applications provide greater protection against cybersecurity attacks. Some of the well-known Saas/Applications market providers are Salesforce, ZOHO, Microsoft 365 (office and email), Slack and Canva.

2) Business Automation

Automation increases the speed, productivity and efficiency of the organisation. Firms can easily deploy multiple instances of their services as the demand rises and scale back when the demand is low.

Built-in Cloud automation processes include automatic backup of databases, encryption of information and multiple layers of security and access control permissions system.

Software firms use the private cloud as a test environment for new applications. Engineers can set up test programs, add sample data and run computations before it is released into the production environment without setting up a single piece of physical hardware.

3) Remote working and Collaboration

Collaboration is essential for employees who work in teams. Cloud allows remote file sharing for employees to exchange documents internally as well as provide safe access to information for customers.

Due to pandemics and health and safety reasons, many office workers are working from home. Cloud enables work from home for employees as well as offering more opportunities for work 24/7 without restrictions of resources. Even after the pandemic, most businesses are considering adopting remote workplaces.

4) Data Storage and Management

Cloud provides excellent storage solutions which are scalable and adaptable. Business data can be stored in the form of different formats and database solutions. Cloud users can use up to date database applications for the latest security updates. Out of the box, encryption allows for greater security control.

Cloud provides scalable storage solutions for big organisations that are constantly generating big data and need solutions that can be scaled as well upgraded. Big data can be stored, moved as well as processed using the power of cloud resources. The storage comes with built-in backup and business continuity solutions for safekeeping and recovery of business data.

Cloud provides greater security, access and scalability for easier access of data from different departments and drives business success.

5) Business Analytics

The business world has become such a big place with regards to data that’s it getting unmanageable. There is so much of it that it’s hard to digest or even translate. It’s hard to make good decisions for the company to be successful without Business Analytics. This also means that huge opportunities are being missed every single day because managers are unable to see correlations between data.

Collecting data by itself is not enough. You have to be able to process that data in such a way that you can make correlations between different patterns and behaviours. This allows management to make business decisions on how to spend money when to execute on certain types of plans or projects and it all depends on the data that you have.

Big firms use the scalability of the Cloud to find solutions to challenges as well as finding the right IT strategy for the future.

In conclusion, Cloud is a highly scalable technology that allows businesses of all sizes to digitally transform, implement new technologies easily, share and collaborate thereby increasing business agility. Digital transformation is essential for a business to keep growing and stay competitive in the market.
The Cloud can store and compute large chunks of information (big data) and process it regardless of the location. The analysis of this information can be used to improve business performance, provide collaboration tools for employees and better customer experience for clients.
